Would you believe that there are some people who like the smell of horses? Horse manure, after all, is just grass.

Of course, those of us with this affliction would have preferred to have kept the Little Barn, instead of razing it for condos.

That leaves Kensington Stables, which is owned by the Blankenship family, as the last place where you can get on a horse and ride on the bridle path in a Vaux and Olmsted park.

There are a couple of horses at Kensington who used to live across the street and, like many in Brooklyn, were displaced by overdevelopment.

They are planning to ask top dollar for these apartments. The whole thing is going to be an eyesore and strain the old sewers in the area (there's another 8 storey building going up over the road on this small street, and it's built on land that had toxic chemical storage there and an old chalkboard factory).

Check out the stable brooklyn yahoo group and website for more. Both these developments have angered neighbors and are out of keeping with the neighborhood. Also developers and builders have cut phone lines and acted in un-neighborly ways.

I also personally doubt these apts will sell--the asking price is high and the market isn't looking that good.

I checked the NY Times article regarding the sale of the other half of the stables, and it says that Walter Blankinship owns the stables and the building. So the horses aren't going anywhere for a while.

What I don't get is building a condo development across the street from a horse stable in the first place. I don't know any of the details of the project, but based on what else has happened in that area (the building on CIA), they will probably ask top-dollar. But who will pay that when they will be treated with the odor of horse manure 24x7? I just think the decision to put a condo on that corner is strange. I hope that the stable will not be forced to close. Does anyone know if the stable owns their property?
