Opossum Kingdom?

So word on the street is we have an opossum population right here in Kensington. Local Brendan tipped us off to these cute little marsupials after snapping a shot of this critter on Albemarle Road. Though this photo looks a little gruesome, in all likelihood this thespian of the animal kingdom is very much alive and out rummaging through your garbage or chasing tasty rats into the safety of your home right now. I, for one, welcome our pointy-snouted overlords.

They are very cute (and totally harmless) but don't see them too often. We see those gorgeous (but very mischievous)raccoons much more frequently. And, of course, lots and lots of squirrels. Brooklyn really has some beautiful and interesting wildlife.

"Cute little marsupials"?? We have had a family of 5 here on Albemarle-Kenmore Terraces for quite some time. They have sharp teeth and have eaten thru the wood on our back door attempting to get to our cats' food, have attacked one of our cats in our garden, attacked a neighbor's small dog and caused much other havoc. And, of course, they can be rabid, just as can those "cute" racoons. When threatened they will usually hold very still (as a possum) but if pushed will bite people. BE CAREFUL!

Actually, opossums' body temperatures are too low to carry rabies. Check out this site: opossumsocietyus.org for excellent TRUE information on these creatures. It even has great tips on how to prevent them from causing damage to your property.

I haven't checked in in awhile (as befits someone all the way over on Marlborough and Caton, technically Flatbush), but...when did this blog become so goddam funny?! (and serviceable and timely in the bargain). Keep up the good work guys. I want roasted possum for my Festivus buffet.

We're in the middle of possum season! Though I personally wouldn't put my mouth anywhere near one of the $hiteatin b@stards...

I live at 400 Argyle and work late. One night at about 2am I was utterly startled by a huge 'possum moving along the front of the building, more afraid of me chasing him than the other way around. He or she was the size of a medium-sized dog, but no ferocity whatsoever.

I found a dead racoon in my backyard after a tree fell when the tornado came roaring through here last year. I am on East 3rd between Church Ave, and Albemarle Rd.

I called 311, didn't know what to do with it, they told me to just put it in a plastic bag and put it in the trash.

Apparently it's not unusual for an opossum to become diurnal during the winter. Here's some footage we captured last weekend just off of Ocean Parkway:
