It is with great regret and sorrow that Estelle will be closing its door. The space is now officially up for rent. Rent is $1400 - space is renovated and ready to move in. The store has a full basement. The landlord is open to a food business ie: coffee/tea house.
Also available for rent is a small space next to Tonnino's Pizza on East 5th across the play section of Greenwood Playground

wow, not even a year.
It was the store's lack of paddy wacks that eventually did her in.
Estelle would have had a chance had it been better run.
My husband and I went to check it out in early December and at 1:00pm on a Saturday a neighboring business owner had to fetch her to open the door--she was next door visiting or something--which was bizarre during the holiday shopping season.
And the selection was all over the place and there wasn't enough of anything to make browsing a pleasure. We bought something out of neighborhood loyalty, but had no burning desire to go back.
Hopefully a well-run something terrific will go in its place.
That's a surprise since I purchased a nice shell bracelet there last month. She's from Paris and had many album covers of some famous French singers on the walls, which offered my hubby and I one big nostalgia trip.
I know $1400 doesn't sound like a lot of money but for that strip it actually is. it doesn't lend itself to the offbeat, like Estelle. I'm sorry she couldn't make it.
Wow. I don't think it even made 6 months? That's really too bad. It had lovely things! Apparently, the neighborhood is not ready or does not have enough people to sustain it. It unfortunately doesn't get the foot traffic.
Anyone know how the sneaker place is doing? I think if any place will do well, it will have to be lower priced items closer to Church Ave or Macdonald.
I think the owner was great and I am sorry the store is closing. The store could have been an anchor to the block--encouraging new businesses to open. But the people have spoken and we are so lucky to be getting a REAL ESTATE OFFICE with a hideous sign! I guess that is all we deserve over here.
She had great taste, beautiful things to sell and was very professional. It was something besides a nail salon, besides a pizza shop, an unstocked bodega or even besides yet ANOTHER Thai joint. In addition the owner was very community minded and was willing to host events there to bring new neighbors together. But we can all meet each other at the real estate office I guess.
The newly opened Falafel Fusion on Church Ave serves coffee. I know it isn't called a grande latte lite foam frufru 5 BUCKS PLEASE, but there are cups and a place to sit!
I just hope they start to open earlier than 9 AM.
Kensington needs a good real estate office.
El jefe gordo Chris, el queso está viejo y pútrido.
something about cheese and a big head? or getting head while eating cheese?
that sucks. my wife loves that little store. then again, a nice, down-home coffee shop would be nice. or another real estate office would be perfect.
A couple of hipsters without the means to pay for Park Slope housing move into Kensington and, voila, a new hip nabe is born. They clamor for upscale shopping, organic food in the supermarket, and gourmet coffee shops. Estelle bought into the concept. Six months later Estelle is gone. Wishing and whining don't make a neighborhood. Wake up and smell the coffee. Yeah, right. We don't have an upscale coffee shop!
Given the sparse and bland postings coming lately in this blog, it may itself be nearing its RIP notice.
Chris following your previous, and underappreciated, Hedley Lamar gang member interview quote, the spanglish is also a movie quote, from a scene in Encino Man. Paulie Shore is a genious I tell you, genious.
Oh wait...Yes a coffee shop would be superb, don't bother to patronize the new falafel place that serves breakfast and coffee!
Wait PAULIE SHORE ! You disappointed me. Why not quote the spice girls movie or Bill and Ted's excellent adventure.
And we really need a kinkos.
My apologies Chris, I had actually thought the incorrect spelling of genius, twice, would indicate to most readers a tongue firmly planted in cheek. As far as the movie choice with the intended reader being, well you, again trying to fit the intended audience... did not mean to disappoint.
OBTW the Spice girls made a movie? Seriously? And people watched?
Not a big Paulie Shore fan, as far as comedians go, I like guys like Jim Norton, Stephen Lynch & Mitch Hetberg.
What I really want to know is who's zoomin' who?
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
And it makes me wonder.
But if you feel like I feel, I got the antidote
Women wave your pantyhose, sing the chorus and it goes...
'Cause I'm Slim Shady, yes I'm the real Shady
All you other Slim Shadys are just imitating
So won't the real Slim Shady please stand up,
please stand up, please stand up?
Falafel Fusion has good-tasting falafel sandwiches and at a very reasonable price.
And you choose the ingredients you want added, like baba ghanoush, hummus, green pepper, guacamole, and so on.
i cant choose ham.
A priest and a rabbi are sitting next to each other on an airplane. After a while the priest turns to the rabbi and asks, "Is it still a requirement of your faith that you not eat pork?"
The rabbi responds, "Yes, that is still one of our beliefs."
The priest then asks, "Have you ever eaten pork?"
To which the rabbi replies, "Yes, on one occasion I did succumb To temptation and tasted a ham sandwich."
The priest nodded in understanding and went on with his reading. A while later, the rabbi spoke up and asked the priest, "Father, is it still a requirement of your church that you remain celibate?"
The priest replied, "Yes, that is still very much a part of our faith."
The rabbi then asked him, "Father, have you ever fallen to the temptations of the flesh?"
The priest replied, "Yes, rabbi, on one occasion I was weak and broke with my faith."
The rabbi nodded understandingly. He was silent for about five minutes, and then he said,
"Beats the hell out of a ham sandwich, doesn't it?"
It was a nice store. Really different, it felt like another world inside. Probably the Parisian influence. It was comfortable, a place you wanted to hang out. She needed some time to build a loyal clientele. Probably a "more happenin' " neighborhood would have helped.
Enjoy your new real estate office, cozy up to the fax machine there.
A Priest and a Rabbi are walking by a schoolyard as the kids were getting out for recess.
The Priest asks the Rabbi, "Hey, want to go into the playground and screw some kids?"
The Rabbi responds, "out of what?"
I got millions of them, I will be here all week, try the veal, and tip your bartenders.
estelle was a really nice store. probably to develop something like that, you really need a landlord willing to give you EXTREMELY low rent in the interest of the neighborhood. what sounds 'low' for park slope, etc. is not 'in the ballpark' for something unique in kensington. it's just the way it is.
Plus she wouldn't be getting people outside the neighborhood to come there, for the most part, because that isn't a heavily traveled strip. how often can people in the neighborhood buy relatively expensive gifts or home furnishings? that's why nail salons and restaurants and more of the same gets offered.
I do hope Kensington Blog is not disheartened and starts posting more again soon! even the daily pictures were nice.
A fool and his money are soon parted.
for the love of The Flying Spaghetti Monster, please post a different topic soon.
I used to live on E 8th and Beverly but not for many years... I'm not sure exactly where this store was and i cannot picture it on the Church strip... Could someone tell me where this was?
If you remember where Beverly intersects Church Ave you would travel from that intersection toward Ocean Parkway a little more than a block. Falafel Fusion is on the right hand side, large Orange sign.
Also I liked the Friday, March 28, 2008 article by Ron Lopez at http://www.kensingtonstories.blogspot.com/
titled
Falafel Fusion and Lee’s Toy Store.
Full disclosure I typically enjoy all of Ron's musings.
Estelle's (was) at 3011 Fort Hamilton Parkway between E. 2nd and E. 3rd no where near Church Ave, closed now, as Chris prophesized back in November, due to a complete lack of paddy whacks.
I am not proud in my prediction of the fall of Estelle's but we do get a shiny new real estate office in it's place.
I saw the plans for the space through the window yesterday. It's being turned into a sushi bar!
