BROOKLYN WAS MINE Edited by Chris Knutsen and Valerie Steiker.
232 pp. Riverhead Books. Paper, $15.
Vapnyar’s excursions into Brooklyn’s innards are as enjoyable as the Ethiopian-born Dinaw Mengestu’s impressions of the scruffy Kensington neighborhood, where he found that “the haphazard gathering of immigrants ... had turned it into a place that even someone like me, haunted and conscious of race and identity at every turn, could slip and blend into.”

Upcoming Weekend (3/1) Service Changes - F
Can anyone make heads or tails of this? Does this mean we'll have to get off the F at 7th to a shuttle bus then back on at Jay? Or does it just mean the people at the stops affected have to use the shuttle?
Free shuttle buses replace F G trains between Hoyt-Schermerhorn Sts and 7 Av
Weekend, Mar 1 – 3, 12:01 AM Sat to 5 AM Mon
How will this affect my trip?
• Transfer between the A F G trains and shuttle buses at Hoyt Schermerhorn Sts
• For service to/from Bergen, Carroll, and Smith-9 Sts transfer between theF G trains and local shuttle bus at Hoyt-Schermerhorn Sts or transfer between F trains and local shuttle bus at 7 Av.

Church Ave gets Falafal?!
We heard this rumor months ago and it seems to be true! A new sign went up for a store front on Church Ave near Korner Pizza saying 'Falafal Fusion' Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. The windows are still covered w paper but the new fancy awning seems a sign of good things to come.

Local Crime
WOW! We just got this and are pretty alarmed. Anyone else know more?
Last night around 2:30am there was an argument between a group of people on McDonald, directly across from Foodtown and a group of individuals in a car. At once, there was one gunshot. More yelling and then the car peeled out, down Albemarle. It was overheard that the car, a white escalade, had Conneticut plates. Cops arrived within two minutes of the 911 call. It appears the victim was only shot in the arm.

From the Inbox
I saw that they tore down the two houses next to the giant lot on Caton between East 7th and 8th, and read that there was a discussion about the project with the community (which I didn't know about, sadly). I would REALLY like to see the project built with commercial space on the ground floor - there are only the four stores on Caton and the nursery, and wondering if you could put up a post asking if anyone else in the hood would also like to see some stores at that location, and see if anyone has the contact info for the developer. I know who he is, but have no idea how to reach him. Generally it's a good return for him since stores could provide income for his project, and might bring some added amenities to the neighborhood that are sorely lacking due to the randomness of the zoning on Caton
Any opinions or info out there about the space discussed above on Caton?

Major Accident at Church & Ocean
On our way home tonight we noticed a lot of police activity and traffic delays at the intersection of Church Ave and Ocean Pkwy specifically at the on ramp of the Prospect Expressway. At 4pm groceries were strewn all over the street and there were ambulances galore. At about 8pm we heard it finally cleared up. In fact 1010WINS highlighted it on the traffic report. No word on what officially went down... anyone out there got the scoop?

Missing Bus Stop?
From the Inbox:
Apparently, the B67 bus stop on the corner of E. 2nd and McDonald (across the street from Shalomi car shop) no longer exists. The drivers don't seem to know anything about it, and all they tell me is that the sign has been taken down.
Anyone know what happened?

Kensington Stories
From Ron at Kensington Stories. One which we're sure many people can relate to....
A School for our Son (Kensington Present)
Note: The following account is about our private struggle to get my son into a decent school. We started “public” and then looked “private”. We lived in Fort Greene Brooklyn at the time, so our options were not as varied as here. Please just try to laugh and not get depressed. Because like my Mom used to say; “at the end it will all work out”.
