got a brand new facade which we think looks good. When we met the new Walgreens manager at the recent ANA meeting he talked a lot about trying to get the store up to Walgreens standards. We know many residents were upset with the change and loss of things they liked in the store (spices, variety of greeting cards) but sort of hope other surrounding stores will catch the cleaning bug. Personally we feel the addition of the two garbage cans to that corner was a great step as is the new facade.

Walgreens Gets New Facade

I miss the old variety. The other day I went by and the garbage can in front was on fire and smoking. They put it out quickly.
Yeah, the garbage cans are a HUGE help... that's one wind-blown trashy corner!
I haven't walked by recently, but noticed some of the changes... I'm all for it. I don't get this connection with old styles unless the maintenance is kept up. Quaint decrepitness is the same as any other decrepitness. When you straighten up, clean up, others respond in kind around.
Go to Parkway Pharmacy for personal, local service.
The window displays at Walgreen's crack me up. Wow, Peroxide AND Isopropyl alcohol?
steve, I REALLY miss the window dressing that silverrod used to do. that was awesome.
And you have to be kidding about the garbage cans! Did they really need two of those huge things? And what's the deal with the big blue dumpsters? SR never needed those...are they permanent?
This is another case of a national chain moving into an ill-fitting urban space...it's like they kept all the worst parts of silverrod and brought in all the worst parts of their national franchise standards as well. It might not seem like much to them, but I bet between last minute toys for birthday parties, kitchen tools, dry goods and all our medicines and toiletries, we spent a pretty good chunk of change at the Rod every year. No more.
I have found everything that I need at Walgreens... and the inside is getting progressively cleaner, and the people there have been very friendly and helpful.
New facade? It looks like they just painted it. I keep waiting for the big red "Walgreens" to show up.
i thought that was going to be a starbucks.
i find that i can not find a thing in walgreens and it is as unsatisfactory to me as rite aid.
PARKWAY PHARMACY IS GREAT GENE AND ADAM ARE VERY HELPFUL AND NICE
Walgreens is expensive. I paid less for tampons in a Duane Reade on the upper west side. How is it possible that I can buy toiletries and feminine products cheaper on the Upper West Side then in Kensington!!!?!?! I'm not being sarcastic, and I'm not joking- tampons aren't the cheapest thing in the world you know. I hate Rite Aid, so right now I'm stuck going to MF for my non-medicinal pharmacy needs.
wow, didn't really need to hear the tampon story
Chris - you call that a tampon story? Uh, pal, you actually know any women that ain't mommy?
noisejoke - yes, but my gf doesn't run home to tell me about the fantastic deal on tampons she found.
She doesn't? At our place we have Tampon Tuesdays, where we throw on Steel Magnolias LaserDisc edition and talk about absorbency.
I feel bad for you man.
Remember, Parkway Pharmacy offers friendly, local tampon advice, whereas Rite Aid and Walgreens offer only impersonal, corporate tampon talk.
At our place, such talk occurs not each Tuesday but rather for four or five days about once a month.
I prefer maxi pads, with wings
I hope they keep the SilverRod Pharmacy sign. It would be a nice way to keep a nod to the old neighborhood.
walgreen's sucks - more expensive than most drug stores, less variety. bring back silverrod.
Why did Silver Rod close?
Personally I'm sad to see this. Silver Rod was a great store when I live in the neighborhood. They had everything, tools, toys, even some groceries and their cosmetics counter was pretty good.
I'm not sure why anyone would think I national chain moving into the neighborhood to replace a family owned business that has been there for years would be a good thing.
Maybe you'll be happy when they bulldoze part of Church Avenue and put in a Walmart.
7-39 or a Home Depot.
As far as I'm concerned, Walgreens' prices on almonds and other nuts and dried fruit (all in bags, so they haven't been pawed through as at Golden Farm) justify the existence of the place. Only spot I know of in the neighborhood to get dried cherries/blueberries at a reasonable price.
Hello, like your blog. I see you are talking about Walgreens here. I learned about the company on this great site www.pissedconsumer.com. The reason I paid attention to it is that it is a pharmaceutical company and it has so many negative feedbacks from the clients. I think is is shameful. They are supposed to cure people and they in fact make it worse for them causing inconveniences.
