So we got word the impromptu Kensington evening at Denny's was pretty successful. About 6 people showed up and had drinks until the wee hours. We did get back that the locals were pretty territorial of the jukebox! Also had a good laugh that blog reader Holly dropped her drink and was down graded to plastic cups the rest of the evening! We think that is hysterical. Add any other good stories to the comments section.So we want to try this again some Friday evening or Saturday at Shenanigans when us bloggers will actually be around... next 2 weekends are sort of booked but maybe the 21st before Yom Kippur? And maybe this time we can do it a little earlier for the lame-o's who like to be in jammies by 10.30pm (namely us on a Friday).

hey tara! thanx so much for the great website, LOL!
uh huh...
To Denny's newest denizens;
So, I take it you didn't enjoy selections from The Wall and album side Yes? (Actually, I've heard oddly eclectic Classic Rock there).
To Kensington Blogger;
Ten Thirty? TEN THIRTY??? I'm not even there yet. You never heard of a disco nap?
xo, NJ
NJ-
Actually we were the ones mixing it up with the Police and the Clash, etc. I tried for some Floyd and even a little Rush but got vetoed. The locals were playing Jay-Z and Beyonce.
I hope this doesnt turn out to be the next hipster transplant neighborhood. Or has it already?
What hipsters listen to Rush? (Shh, my wife may be reading...)
Jake - last time I was there I swear it was Floyd, Yes (!!!) and Rush. Personally, I could do without JayZ AND The Police. I guess I've been there on weeknights. Anyway, I've had it with Arcade Fire and even GBV on jukes. Where's the Jerry Lee, Merle H. and Black Flag?
"Locals" seems so insulting coming from people that live in the neighborhood. How about "regulars?" Sad in a way, but more appropriate for Denny's. I'm convinced that the crowd after 11:00 pm on a Friday or Saturday are not all from the neighborhood, but rather those who flock there from here and there for reasons not to be mentioned.
where is Shenanigans? my brother and I might show up sometime. we both love your blog. we've been living here since 1986 (when i was 2 and he was 5).
Joanna
Shenanigans is on Caton, half a block east of Ocean Pkwy.
Regulars? I wouldn't want to assume that one's digestive system is up to par. Really though, regulars and locals aren't the same thing. As NJ mentioned, the "regulars" at Denny's tend to listen to 70s rock, whereas the "Locals" we encountered were listening to R&B/Hip-Hop all night. They didn't appear to be on a first name basis with the bartender, they just looked like neighborhood 'kids.'
The two bartenders that were there seemed really, really happy the six of us came and went out of their way to make us feel really welcome and invite us back.
shenanigans is on caton and e7th, i hear that they have a kick butt karaoke on saturday nights
Count me in! Shenanigans is just down the block from me and I haven't worked up the courage to go there alone.
Hey Joanna, let me know when you hit up shenanigans. I'm 24, lived here for 12 years and don't see many people near my age around the hood. I tend to go to LES, but it would be nice to chill nearby sometimes.
sorry i meant to put a name on that last post. Posting anonymous is a habit of mine
Someone should start a Facebook group for Kensington folks so we can get organized....I don't really know that much about it. Any volunteers?
Shenanigans doesn't have a website but Eddie the Karaoke Guy has song books that give EddieMacMusic.com as his website. I checked it out and he has a link to mapquest and a lot of Information. We've been there a few times and they do Karaoke until almost closing time. It's a real cozy place and it wasn't anything like we expected the first time we went in on a lark.
Denny's was wonderful years ago when it had a great restaurant in the back. I took my daughter, my mom and friends there for dinnr many, many times and was sorry it deteriorated and the restaurant was closed. The food was terrific.
A Kensington Oldtimer (still going strong).
DENNY'S IS STILL A GREAT PLACE TO HANGOUT, AND HAVE THE OCCASIONAL DRINK, REGUARDLESS OF WHAT MUSIC IS PLAYING! NOT EVERYONE GETS WHAT THEY WANT IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD! SHANNY'S IS THE SAME WAY IF YOUR NICE TO THE BARTENDER!
