Update on F Express... Boo Hiss!

From 2nd Ave Sagas:

It’s my understanding that crews will be working not only on the tracks but around and underneath them too. With the recent attention to track worker safety, the MTA isn’t, rightly so, about to start screwing around with train bottlenecks on a large viaduct. With the current F and G trains relying on just two tracks for their routes and turnarounds, the tracks simply cannot support adding more trains.

To me, it sounds like the folks along the Culver Line are in for a rough ride. The project is scheduled to take four years, and it will probably result in delays and trains crawling over the Gowanus Canal.

Ugh.

If it gets really bad I guess I'm going to have to start biking my sedentary rump to work everyday. I can't deal with overly late trains with people packed in like Sardines. It makes me feel like Blanche DuBois.

cycling is an excellent alternative. I'm a three-and-a-half season commuting cyclist and it's really awesome... the only bummer for me is that my unpredictable schedule sometimes makes for lonely, cold, dark rides home in the late fall and early winter. but it's well worth trying and this time of year is a perfect time to give it a shot!

Laika, is you bicycle night-safe with lights or reflective tape??

yes, I have blinkies front and rear on both bikes & the bag I carry (when I carry a bag) has a reflective strip on it.

Better than blinkies is 3M reflective tape along the front and rear wheel struts, and other places on the frame. White in front, red in back. Any good-sized automotive supply store should carry it.

Starting to make our living in the supposed "Dead Zone" of Kensington look better and better with it's proximity to the pretty reliable Q train. Not to mention a short walk to Ditmas and the new stuff on Cortelyou.

The F was tolerable when we lived near the Bergen street stop but it's misery out here. Sympathies for the folks that are that much closer to that train. I'll sign any F train petition out there but it will probaby always remain a back up plan for me.

Although more expensive than the subway, the express bus makes the trip to lower manhattan a breeze, and the trip to midtown tolerable.

The X29 bus is frequently targeted for elimination. It's the orphan of the Brooklyn express buses.

If the MTA had it's way it would elimnate all the express bus routes in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx. MTA claims they lose money, like the subways don't lose money also?

The viaduct may be in worse shape than anyone will admit. It has never been rehabbed in it's 70 years of existence. MTA may have to tear it down and rebuild it from the ground up. That would mean no subway service at all for at least two years, if not more.

I hope Bill de B. and the others that had the rally in July will follow up on this. the F is AWFUL at rush hour!!!!

Don't get your hopes up about an express train. I used to live on the N and we waited for years for that express to come. When it did, service was actually WORSE. "Express" basically means less trains coming less often and making less stops. If you're lucky it will balance out to the same commute time.
