First off we heard there was no F train service at Church Ave b/w 7 and 8 am this morning. We were told local car services had a wait of at least 45 minutes and buses were packed. (We bicycled after watching NY1).Besides the morning commute trees are down all over the neighborhood. We saw a huge tree was down on Albemarle Road b/w the OP service extension and E5th St. The tree looks as if it was pulled up from the roots and the surrounding sidewalk came up with it. The fallen tree extends across Albemarle from sidewalk to sidewalk making entrance to OP impossible. There were also 2 cars pretty much totalled from the fall. The pictures above are from a reader, Jeff, and seem to be near 135 Ocean Pkwy. A Kensington resident is even featured on Gothamist this morning talking about the tornado. Any other horror stories on the morning commute or local damage?

Apparently the sycamore tree was uprooted due to a tornado. Nuts, eh?
The MTA is telling everyone to stay home and give them a chance to pump the water out of the system. Buses are running WAY behind schedule due to street flooding as well. Looks like a lot of people will be getting the day off.
There are several trees that have fallen outside 135 Ocean Parkway where I live. It is incredibly sad to see how many trees have been uprooted. Fortunately, it seems like nobody was hurt. Thank heavens this happened early in the morning when few people, if any, were out and about walking on Ocean Parkway.
There's damage to every tree on our block, ranging from small branches down to entire trees having been uprooted, and everything in between. Two crushed cars, siding, shingles and sofits torn off of multiple houses, Church Ave has a ton of minor damage, including the near-destruction of Korner's tree, Bagels Deli's sign gone & Old McDonald's Awning all bent up. You'd think for all that it wouldn't be sweltering again, huh? It must be like 85° already!
I can't believe the classism rampant on this site. In my culture we are tired of all these trees you yuppie newcomers love so much. If you want trees, move to Ohio. And there have always been floods on the subway. Why did you move to Brooklyn if you wanted subways that run well? Stop your privelaged whining.
i'm confused? only yuppies love trees? i am hardly a yuppie, but i grew up in the country and therefore love trees. is that so wrong? there are people who live in this neighborhood who come from all over the world!
i really wish that the people who are so resistant to any sort of change would either stay off of this blog or at least just quit whining. yeah it sucks when neghborhoods become completely gentrified but negativity and bitching are not constructive and do nothing to stop it. in fact, i would think it worsens the problem because it encourages a divide in the community. the core purpose of this blog is a positive one. can we please stop squabbling about the motivations and implications???
Wow, Heidi. Heard of sarcasm?
anon - you're a jerk. You're sarcasm only belittles the fact that some comments really are racist/classist(like the ones that blame mexicans and muslims for all the things wrong with the nabe).
On another note- is there are movie being filmed around albemarle? The No parking signs are up between e2nd and e4th but i haven't stopped to read them and figured someone here would get the scoop.

HONEY, DO YOU LIVE IN THE PROJECTS?
Becauase you sure as hell act like you do...Again, I hope gentrification kicks your arse out of the Kens too!
see, gentrification is a good tihng!
How is it that this turned into a rant about gentrification? The point is that there has been extensive damage in our neighborhood, to our streets, homes and personal property. In front of 135 OP we lost about 6 trees, and they landed on top of our neighbors cars, so show a little respect.
We awoke to a roar and a loud crack around 6:30 this morning. It looks like half the large maple tree from the apt bldg behind us has fallen into our backyard along with part of our maple. In the front of our house more tree branches, including one that broke our car window and dented the roof. Thank goodness nothing hit our house!
Trees and branches are down all over the neighborhood - several trees appear to be down along OP.
I woke up around 630 as well to a really loud roar. There was a ton of lightning and thunder and then this crazy sound I had never heard before. I said to my girflriend "What the hell was that?" But when I couldnt see anything but rain out the window. The sign of Dahill Pizza was ripped right out of the side of the building and trees were all over the place. The PA/Satalite dish on top of the mosque on Church was also completely smashed.
Pretty crazy stuff!

If you live in the third world you will have third world conditions. Enjoy!
Gentrification isn't going to push me out because I OWN my place. Only an utter fool would pay rent in this city.
Anyway...
My wife called and said E4 between Bev. and C was littered with downed trees and smashed cars. To all those who've suffered damage, our hearts and thoughts are with you.
We dodged a bullet, and nothing came down on the car on E5. My bigger dog however spent the evening cowering and sitting on my head, so I haven't slept yet.
The Times City Room blogger filed a report from Crossroads Cafe, which filled F train overflow this morning. Check it: http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/08/08/flooding-cripples-subway-system/
Seems like a business on McDonald just off Church (down from Dennys and near the bangladeshi hairdresser) had some or all of its facade or fire escape fall in. There's a ton of yellow tape up and debris everywhere.
I had to take the train to Jay St and it took three trains to go by before I could get on one. Then, on my way to my second errand, after a 30 minute wait, it was announced that the G trains were not running. Ugh. I turned right around and went home. It's like 95 degrees out there!
E4th is a mess--several trees down, a car and a van smashed, debris everywhere. Crazy!
FYI -
The NYTimes website lead article has some good coverage of Kensington, as of about noon today.
story street is a huge mess-no one was hurt. we lost a tree and huge sections of trees. 1 car is now demolished and my neighbors cant get in or out of their house(a tree fell in front of it. a tree limb from across the street broke through 2 doors and ended up in my neighbors bedroom.
Small tornados probably touched down in Kensington, Brooklyn, JFK/Jamaica Bay, Queens and the North Shore of Staten Island.
Dahill Pizza mis-spelled their sign, so I guess it's not such a big loss. I hope they can correct the error when they put up the new sign. :)

people need to be more mature and stop being so sensitive,,,, oh they insulted me so i'm gonna be just as immature and return the ignorance.
Grow the hell up
dahill pizzeria was sold a week ago.
I bought the Dahill Pizzeria. I'm expanding and will have a full line of organic sicilian pizzas and other items in a cafe style setting. I may do breakfast since I have to be in the shop early anyway. Maybe gourmet coffees, rolls and bagels, small stuff easy and quick. I'll have to see if it works out.
don't forget the wifi.
Actually I think Anon 9:48a is hilarious. Anyone who doesn't get it didn't read the comments about the 3am party folk at the basketball court or the ones about the graffitti art school kids on the bridge.
I get her/his point, anyway.
Dahill pizza person... are you serious? A real cup of coffee around here? Ican't wait!!!!!
doubtful.
The new owners are from Bangladesh. If you are waiting for a good cup of coffee from a fictious character-all you will get is the emporers pasta putanesca-you will be waiting for godot.............

What s/he said.
It's probably going to be shite like every other pizza place in the neighborhood. Nasty!
Bangladeshi pizza, I can hardly wait.
We may have crap for the average local slice but we're also quite close to probably the best (or one of the best) pizza in the US, Difara's. Of course it's so idiosyncratic that other true gourmandizers may not take to it, merely out of personal pizza aesthetic.
It's only a short car or Q ride away. Dom's back in action after the DOH crackdown, but closed Mondays for the summer.
Go give him yr love, while yr taking a break from cleaning up and crawling from the wreckage. School's out, so 2-3pm is the best time to go.
at least it will be halal pizza
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS BUSINESS OWNER? DOES HE THINK WE NEED MORE PIZZA IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD? IF HE WAS A SMART BUSINESSMAN, HE WOULD BE LISTENING TO WHAT KENSINGTON IS BLOGGING ABOUT RESTAURANT WISE AND WE HAVE BEEN SAYING FOR A LOOOONG TIME THAT WE DON'T NEED ANOTHER PIXXA, CHINESE OR 99CENT STORE...DON'T THESE PEOPLE LISTEN?
IDIOT!
Do you really think that the Bangladeshi, Albanian, Russian, etc. business owners in the neighborhood are reading this blog?
Yes, under a pseudo name:Read 448

That gourmet coffee better be organic, shade-grown and fair-trade or you might have a protest on your hands!
I'm a bit wierded out by a Bangladeshi being able to make organic sicilian pizza as well as gourmet coffees...I really think that is a joke!
Have you ever been to Bangladesh? Everything in our country is organic and gourmet. We do not have your very low standards. This is why we have come to Kensington to spread our knowledge and understanding of peoples and Sicilian slices.
YEAH, RIGHT.
BANGLADESH IS NOT KNOWN FOR MUCH EXCEPT
(1) being a young country-"born" in 1971
(2) one of the poorest country in the world
(3) severe power outages and monsoon season sweeps away the many tin shanties and houses alike.
(4)For some reason, feeling like Kensington, Brookyn is their home.
