Brooklyn Parrots

We knew that Pale Male and Lola's kids have been hanging at Greenwood Cemetery but had no idea we'd see a wild parrot this far up. They tend to hang near Brooklyn College and a few places in Bensonhurst so we were surprised to see a pair on Ocean Pkwy and Ave. C.

When I lived in Park Slope the parrots came over for "lunch" from Greenwood Cemetery, I think. We had a callary pear tree (I did the tree request thing) and they seemed to know when it would fruit. The little buggers were noisy and would flash through the trees, squawking, and eating the fruit. They're a hardy bird and will explore new turf. Maybe they'll be as ubiquitous as roaches in BK. I love to see that flash of green!

There is actually a big flock in Greenwood Cemetery, so it doesn't surprise me. OP and Cortelyou is between the cemetery and Midwood.

growing up in bay ridge, we used to see even more exotic birds than parrots, who were (reportedly) stowawys from the ship plying the narrows on their way up into the harbor. supposedly they'd feast on the frogs & bugs in the visitation. they bever lasted throuh the winter, thoug...I like to think they found passage back south once it got cold, but you never know.

ON o.p. and 18 avenue there is a feeder which attracts a large amount of them

There are parrot's nests in several locations around Brooklyn...probably inhabited decendants of the same 'escapees.' The only one I can think of off the top of my head is on Ave I somewhere between Ocean Parkway and McDonald Ave.

True Story-
A few years back on Christmas day I was walking up to our former corner deli in PS. I thought for a moment I was hullucinating as a barren tree in the dead of winter appeared to be bright green up in the branches. When I got closer I couldn't believe my eyes. Behold! A tree FULL (I counted 15) of bright green parrots!!! I had never heard about the parrots of Greenwood Cemetary so you can imagine how awestruck I was. I'll never forget it.

They visit my backyard. There are numerous large colonies around Brooklyn College, as well as Greenwood Cemetery. Kensington and Flatbush are in a flyover zone.

Ubiquitous, the little squawkers are! I live near Webster Ave. and O.P. and I frequently see them in trees near my window.
