The comments on a recent post on the upcoming Artist Social got a little snarky which was unfortunate b/c this event was planned with the truest of intentions by some great people. We'll let Scott do the explaining but hope you all choose to attend and come out to meet some locals!
I would like to take this opportunity to address the negative assumptions and impressions derived from the event. My name is Scott Allinson. My email address is donjephotography@earthlink.net. I am the organizer and a local photographer. I want to extend an invitation to everyone that commented to write me directly to discuss any issue posted here. There is no malicious intent or desperation as implied in some comments. We just want to meet like minded people and get a positive word out for Thai Tony's.
Let's be clear. I approached Thai Tony's to host this event. This is my idea and I am responsible for it. I have lived here for over 3 years and have had a very strong desire to meet other artists and make new connections. I finally got the courage and saw an opportunity to organize a casual event with my new friends at Thai Tony's. Angie was gracious and willing to host. We thought a nice menu and a glass of wine and some music might be a nice way to bring us together.
To address some of the specifics of your concerns I would offer the following:
-In order to keep the event simple for organizing and implementation a set price and menu was the best option.
-Setting up an event for free, spending money out of my pocket and hoping that people buy food just isn't possible or fair. I hope you consider that $10 pays the servers and other hard costs but does not mean profit. If free were an option, I'd do it.
-The wine was my idea and is a break even proposition at best. Thai Tony's does not have a liquor license but I thought it might be nice to have it. If you still want to come, buy tickets from me for $7 and I can nix the drink for you. Does that help?
-Also, this is a private party and the restaurant will not be open to the general public. That has to be worth something.
We think that says it all so come on now people... $1o bucks! We're going so come out and give us all those snarky anon comments to our face : )

I didn't think my comments were snarky, and they certainly weren't anonymous. Apparently they also weren't understood.
Okay, maybe that was a bit snarky, but now I'm a bit insulted.
Jake please don't be insulted.. some comments seemed a little snarky (maybe not yours) and everyone involved in the event (or those supporting it - ahem) just wanted people to know it was set up w the best of intentions in mind. we want to meet you and noisejoke!
Oh, I wouldn't miss it.
I've been reading all the comments and now that everything has been aired..... $10 seemed reasonable to me for a glass of wine, hors d'oeuvres, and a friendly gathering of like-minded artists in the neighborhood. And I think it's great Thai Tony's was willing to host.
I think initially, many people (myself included) weren't aware this was booked to be a private party and the restaurant would be closed to the public (thus, the $10 cover might have been palatable). In light of that, it seems reasonable to openly comment on it. The clarification is much appreciated, but it also seemed to participate in the "snarky" comments... which now may cause some to feel uncomfortable showing up.
I hope everyone will put the misunderstandings aside, not be embarrassed to show and we can all laugh over it later. It's great to see we have a healthy population of opinionated and well-intentioned people! I, for one, will try to be there in support of the event, artists, and kensington!
Oy vey! Now, I'm gettin' called out by name! People... I swear I was all ready to come, but our summer calendar is insane. That night we're having dinner with my mother-in-law and sister/brother-in-law visiting from NC. It's the only night we can all gather. Damn. After all this you think I didn't wanna meet you?
I am really excited to mix and mingle with other creative folks. It will be really nice to meet people! My roommate and I do not have any Kensington friends as of yet, and this sounds like a great time. Looking forward to it!
I thought the idea sounded really nifty. Any chance of just a general event if this goes well? I am not an artist but i wouldn't mind a night of music and wine and staying local at the same time :)
Excellent. With no liquor license on site, no one can reserve the right to stop serving me, no matter how embarassing I act.
Also, let's hope Windsor Terrace artists are welcome, since the venue is in Windsor Terrace.
Just representing for the WT. Can't let you Kensingtonians think you own the world.
Damn! I'll be at a conference that day, but would have loved to attend. I hope the event is a success and you will have another!
Gina, this is definitely not limited to Kensington. Please let everyone know this is definitely a Kensington/Windsor Terrace event. Thanks for supporting the idea.
