Brooklyn Expresses: F-Train Frustration
WHO: Council Members Bill de Blasio, Simcha Felder, and Domenic Recchia; Community Activists
WHAT: Rally to Support Petition to Restore Express Service on Brooklyn’s F line
WHEN: 2 pm, Thursday, June 28, 2007
WHERE: Church Avenue Station; Church Avenue and McDonald Avenue, Brooklyn, NY
Brooklyn, New York—Council Members Bill de Blasio (D-Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, Kensington), Simcha Felder (D-Midwood, Bensonhurst and Boro Park), and Domenic Recchia (D-Coney Island, Gravesend, Bensonhurst) will stand with community activists and representatives of the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership and Transportation Alternatives tomorrow, Thursday, June 27, 2007, to rally in support of the restoration of express service on Brooklyn’s F line.
“To let existing transportation infrastructure go unused is a disservice to the Brooklynites who rely on mass transit every day,” says de Blasio.
An online petition in support of restoration launched by community activist Gary Reilly has generated 2,500 signatures in two weeks. “Investments in transit pay off in increased quality of life for everybody,” says Reilly. “Let's get this done.”
“A remarkable shift in conscious is happening in New York City, with a renewed commitment to strategic planning for the future,” says Felder. “But let’s not allow our focus on the future to distort our sight of what’s right in front of us. The MTA plans to restore F express by 2012. We think it can happen sooner than that.”
“Our communities have been clamoring for expedited express train service for years, and the time has come to listen and respect the needs of the City’s subway riders, who are average, every-day New Yorkers,” says Recchia.

OK, so the rally is at 2:00 on a work day. Which leaves out pretty much everyone that this affects the most.
Greetings from an ex-Kensington resident. I lived on Webster Avenue & Seton Place from 1960 to 1990. About the only good thing about my sad end of the neighborhood was the "F" train commute. By 1988 crime was on the rise with too many morning robberies and other problems.
The last year of full peak-direction express service on tracks B3 and B4 was 1975. We fought well into the 1980s for restoration of express service, but by that time residents were fleeing the declining neighborhood and it became a dead issue to the MTA.
I wish you luck and am happy to see that at least some of the old neighborhood is bouncing back.
The MTA can restore express F trains between Church Ave & Jay St, but forget about express service from Church Ave to Kings Hwy. The ridership on the el can't justify it. BUT they could make all el trains express after Church Avenue. A second local F could start at Church Avenue.
There are storage tracks south of Church Avenue used to turn around trains. 2 of those tracks extend down under McDonald Avenue in a partially built tunnel to about Foster Avenue.
Another fully built tunnel without tracks runs under Ft. Ham Pkwy to approx Dahill Road.
The run between Bergen and Church is the only true 4 track line in the system that is not being used! Bring back the late, great F express!
How long is the commute from Penn Station to Fort Hamilton, which is the last F trains stop in Brooklyn? Which times of day are the fastest and which are the slowest commute times? Thank you!
